Discover the story of rail at Ireland’s longest narrow-gauge railway. Waterford Suir Valley Railway brings rails golden age to life onboard a vintage train ride departing from Kilmeadan, County Waterford.

Your journey begins at Kilmeadan Station when you check in at the ticket office, a converted Mark 11 railway carriage. You will be greeted by volunteer train drivers as you approach the platform who will escort you to your private compartment on the train. When the whistle blows, set off on your journey through Waterford’s Suir Valley, an area only accessible by train and the Waterford Greenway.

Take in the panoramic views of the River Suir, watch out for the cormorants as they fish in the river, catch a glimpse into Mount Congreve Gardens, and journey on to Carriganore where the merchants of Waterford are said to have hidden their treasures from Cromwell’s soldiers. Travel at 16km per hour on 6.5km of track, returning the same way between the River Suir and Waterford Greenway on a journey lasting 40 minutes. Children are invited to take part in a treasure hunt before and during the train trip. The volunteer crew are happy to talk to you about the history of the abandoned Waterford to Cork Railway line and Waterford Suir Valley Railway.

Enjoy home baked treats with coffee or a creamy 99 ice cream before or after your journey, available from the Whistlestop Café with outdoor seating available.

On Thursday nights, from June to August, hop aboard the Sunset Express. Begin your evening sipping prosecco with strawberries on the platform as you await your departure, enjoying the acoustic sounds of FallAway House. As well as the view, enjoy a delicious local artisan picnic box from GROW HQ Café during the 75 minute trip to Bilberry, along the banks of the River Suir and Waterford Greenway abound with glorious scenery, historic ruins, birds and wildlife. On the return journey, watch the sun dance on the water as it begins to set on the rolling countryside of Waterford and South Kilkenny.
