The Elm Tree was purchased by Derek Walshe and two business partners in 2001 after lying idle for approximately eight years. A bustling bar in the years when people didn’t worry about leaving their cars at home now commenced refurbishment and re-awakening by the business trio. The property quickly gained popularity and a positive reputation for good food and a personal touch under the hands of three attentive owners. Derek had a dream to take the business in his own direction and as such had the opportunity to buy out his 2 partners and ultimately realised this in June 2007. Derek then went about implementing a very definitive concept and design for The Elm Tree which would develop a new classic look and welcoming property known as The Elm Tree, Glounthaune.
Phase one opened to customers in December 2008 and was embraced and supported by the growing customers and extended catchment area. Phase two commenced in June ’09 and the entire project was completed on schedule by December ’09 at a final cost of €3.1 million. The official launch was toasted by approximately 400 guests on the 25th of February, 2010. Other glamorous events to follow included Brown Thomas Fashion Evenings in April 2010 and May 2011 with celebrity mc’s Rosanna Davidson and Andrea Roche thereafter. Followed by the 007 Casino Royale evening with special guest Amanda Brunker.
The Elm Tree was delighted to receive the following awards to date: National Bar of the Year 2010-2011, National Style Bar of the Year 2010-2011, National Carvery of the Year 2011 and National Hospitality Awards - Best Pub with Food 2011. Huge recognition for the work and attention to detail that was put in place at concept stage and successfully maintained within this unique property.‘We created a very specific product for our customers, something that is unique, incorporates style and gives a little luxury. However, none of this is important without customers and we’re lucky that our loyal customers return to us on a continuous basis. We absolutely appreciate our customers who enable us to maintain our standards.’
The ‘Elm Tree’ has a list of corporate and private parties in the months ahead both in their purpose built outdoor barbecue area and private ‘Bank Lounge’. This will lead to the third Brown Thomas Fashion Evening in Autumn 2012 where another classic and memorable evening is planned for all guests.
So life progresses in The Elm Tree, Glounthaune in the manner Derek Walshe visualised from the onset. Attention to detail and customer focus ongoing elements that are watched with a very careful eye.
